Pagon's Foundational Papers

Pagon published eight papers providing a synthesis of available knowledge on aerodynamics in civil engineering.

1950

von Karman's Vision

Theodore von Karman delivered a lecture describing applications and prospects of aerodynamics in engineering.

1961

Integration of Disciplines

ASCE collected papers for the first state-of-the-art description. Davenport published groundbreaking paper integrating meteorology, aerodynamics, and structural mechanics.

1963

1st International Symposium

Kit Scruton organized the first symposium in Teddington, U.K. International Study Group on Wind Effects formed.

1967

2nd Conference - Ottawa

International Conference held in Ottawa, Canada, establishing the American Region rotation.

1971

3rd Conference - Tokyo

Conference held in Tokyo, Japan, establishing the Asia-Pacific Region rotation.

1975

IAWE Founded

4th Conference in London led to founding of International Association for Wind Engineering (IAWE) and naming conferences to ICWE.

5th ICWE - Fort Collins

First official ICWE introduced innovative sections: social/economic impact, wind environment, modeling, and applications.

Official Journal Established

Journal of Industrial Aerodynamics renamed to JWEIA, becoming IAWE's official journal.

6th ICWE & First By-laws

Conference held in Gold Coast and Auckland. First draft of IAWE by-laws submitted.

1985

1st APCWE

First Asia-Pacific Symposium on Wind Engineering created intermediate forum between ICWEs.

1987

7th ICWE - By-laws Approved

Conference in Aachen, Germany. IAWE by-laws officially approved.

1988

1st BBAA Colloquium

First Colloquium on Bluff Body Aerodynamics and Applications held in Japan.

1991

8th ICWE - London, Ontario

Conference held in Canada under existing governance structure.

1992

1st CWE Symposium

First Symposium on Computational Wind Engineering launched in Japan.

1993

1st EACWE

First European and African Conference on Wind Engineering organized.

1995

9th ICWE - New Delhi

Conference held in India, expanding global participation.

1999

10th ICWE - Copenhagen

Committee appointed to modernize IAWE. Four networks created: Bridge Aerodynamics, Cable Aerodynamics, Storm Shelter, and International Codification.

2001

ACWE Established

U.S. National Conference became American Conference on Wind Engineering (ACWE).

2003

11th ICWE - Lubbock

New by-laws approved. Steering Committee replaced by General Assembly and Executive Board.

2004

IAWE Registered

IAWE officially registered with Italian Finance Ministry; database created with 200 contacts.

2006

4th CWE - Japan

Symposium establishing perfect 4-year conference rotation cycle.

2007

12th ICWE - Cairns

Conference in Australia. Y. Tamura elected new IAWE President.

2009

Disaster Risk Reduction

IG-WRDRR established with UN-ISDR to coordinate disaster mitigation globally.

2011

13th ICWE - Amsterdam

General Assembly held; Brazil selected to host 14th ICWE in 2015.
